About the Vera Institute of Justice
The Vera Institute of Justice, founded in 1961, is a nonprofit criminal justice organization that strives to build just government institutions and safe communities free from the scourge of racism, white supremacy, profit, and inequity that is pervasive in this country’s legal systems. The Institute is an “inside” lane organization that drives change at scale with ambitious public sector leaders who share their commitment to building anti-racist, reparative systems that deliver justice. They leverage access to government to transform these systems and work collaboratively with stakeholders across many movements—including advocacy, grassroots, and grassroots organizations. Their role is to pilot solutions that are transformative and achievable, harness the power of evidence to drive effective policy and practice, and use advocacy and communications to change narratives and norms.
Impact Strategy is a critical part of the success of Vera’s Impact Pipeline. Vera works with project teams at different stages of the pipeline to map out comprehensive strategies for shifting criminal and immigration systems toward greater equity and justice. They do this by supporting teams to reflect on lessons learned and their position in the justice reform movement, articulate bold yet realistic aims, and collaboratively outline strategies to achieve the aims. With evaluation colleagues, Vera reflects with teams on their theories and learning as the work rolls out in order to understand what it takes to achieve ambitious change.
The Program Associate is responsible for developing theories of change with Vera initiative teams across all of Vera’s bodies of work to achieve ambitious, national impact that advances racial justice. This is a highly collaborative role requiring a skilled and inclusive group facilitator who can work with teams to map out what an initiative aims to achieve and how they will get there. They will work across Vera departments, including advocacy, communications, and research, to support teams in articulating their strategies for impact. Alongside Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) colleagues, the PA will create a culture and system of reflecting on the theory of change regularly and amending it based on learning. This person will also be responsible for contributing to the design of Vera’s system for building theories of change including developing tools, templates, and workflow. This position will be part of the impact pipeline team, reporting to the Director of Impact Strategy.
